Safeguards and environmental assessment

Helping programs and projects identify environmental and social risks early, and manage them in proportion to what is at stake.

  • REnew Pacific

    DFAT, through Palladium · Pacific · 2025 to present

    Lead environmental advisor. Revised the program’s Environmental and Social Safeguards Framework, designed its cross-country grievance redress mechanism and assess grant proposals for safeguards compliance across numerous Pacific Island countries.

  • Mercury risk in offshore decommissioning

    Australian Government

    Member of a national team assessing mercury risks associated with decommissioning offshore oil and gas infrastructure.

  • Green hydrogen developments

    Australia and overseas

    Preliminary environmental and social impact assessments for proposed green hydrogen developments.

  • Environmental impact statement review

    Queensland Government · 2006 to 2009

    Technical review and advice on environmental impact statements assessed by the Queensland Government.

Climate risk and resilience

Assessing how a changing climate affects infrastructure over its working life, and what can be done about it in design.

  • Climate change risk assessments for water and transport infrastructure

    Queensland and New South Wales · 2024 to present

    Led assessments for wastewater treatment upgrades, bulk water pipelines and road upgrades, applying ISO 31000 and AS 5334 with current climate projections for the 2050s and 2090s.

  • Climate risk workshops

    Multidisciplinary design teams

    Facilitated risk identification workshops with engineering and design teams, built the risk registers and turned the results into adaptation measures for design.

  • Sustainability assessments for business cases

    Water infrastructure, Queensland

    Sustainability and environmental assessments to support detailed business cases for water infrastructure.

Supporting partnerships, panels and agencies to make sound decisions, and to check how well their arrangements are working.

  • Wet Tropics Waterways Partnership

    Leading collaborative decision-making among government, industry and community members to improve waterway health in the Wet Tropics.

  • Australian Water Partnership

    Technical Advisory Panel · 2025 to present

    Independent technical advice on water resource management, climate resilience and safeguards for programs across the Indo-Pacific.

  • Reef Regional Partnerships

  • Healthy Rivers for All

    Led a partnership with local WWF teams developing river basin report cards in the USA, the Philippines, Zambia, Colombia and India.

    Designed and delivered a basin health report card for the Chishui River.

    Lead author of a guide now used internationally as a reference for basin report cards.

    Designed and wrote annual sustainability reports.

Water quality science

The scientific foundation for much of the other work. Monitoring design, water and sediment quality, and ecotoxicology.

  • Expert witness

    Queensland Environmental Protection Agency · 2006 to 2009

    Expert witness on water quality and ecotoxicology in multiple environmental harm prosecutions.

  • Estuarine and Marine Ecosystem Health Monitoring Program

    Queensland Environmental Protection Agency · South East Queensland

    Managed the program and reported its findings to government and partners.

  • Monitoring and approvals

    2009 to 2015

    Led a team of 12 water scientists delivering monitoring and approvals for water, energy, ports, resources and defence clients. Work included nearshore monitoring for a desalination plant, water quality studies for port and LNG developments, and an estuarine management plan for a new dam.

  • Contaminants in waterways

    National Research Centre for Environmental Toxicology, University of Queensland · 2002 to 2006

    Research on antibiotics and other pharmaceuticals moving from wastewater into waterways, supported by an Australian Research Council Linkage Project.

Workshops, courses and plain-language writing that help practitioners and decision-makers work with complex information.

  • Mekong Delta Management course

    World Bank, with the International Water Centre · Viet Nam

    Designed and delivered a training course on managing the Mekong Delta.

  • Climate Change Research Activities Synthesis

    US Geological Survey · United States

    Organised and facilitated eight stakeholder workshops across US eco-regions and produced the summary reports.
